Quick tip: Find people by place

Sometimes tracking down your ancestors by name in the census records is a thankless task. However, The Genealogist has a search engine that lets you search for places rather than people.

Start by logging into your account at www.thegenealogist.co.uk and then switch to Research View. Click Search under House & Street Search, then choose a census year followed by a county from the two drop-down menus. Finally, type in the street name – or part of the name – you’re searching for and click the Search button.

A list of all matches with area and piece/district codes will appear. Click on one to view all recorded addresses on that street. You can narrow the search by house number or name.
