WDYTYA? Disappointment

Last night’s WDYTYA? featuring Jason Donovan was something of a disappointment. What do you think of the current series compared to previous runs?

With the exception of Alexander Armstrong’s episode, I felt the celebrities’ stories so far have been too finely polished in this series, focusing on them as individuals rather than the research process and subject matter of family history.

Perhaps I’m expecting too much. But I would far rather see the ‘bare bones’ of the process rather than celebrities turning up at a records office to find their stories completed by an expert. Where’s the passion and interest in making such discoveries for yourself?

Granted, this may not make compelling viewing, and I understand the restrictions of working in a television format. But I for one would far rather watch a documentary of which genealogy was the central topic, than an entertainment series where the ‘star’ in question’s reactions and screen presence take centre stage.
