Quick tip: Using family photos

As a family historian, you need to take care and make use of your family photos.

You can find out how to preserve your original family photographs at http://www.bl.uk/npo/pdf/photographic.pdf, and you should also interrogate them as primary sources as well as use them in the presentation of your family history. All these demands are best tackled by making digital copies of both front and back, where relevant.

If you have image software, such as Photoshop Elements, the best way to study details is in Actual Pixels mode. Once you’ve opened your image file, either click the Actual Pixels button, or click on View in the menu bar, then select Actual Pixels from the dropdown box. You can then move around the whole enlarged image, stopping to examine tiny or indistinct details, and write up your findings as you go.
