Blog: Holiday like your ancestors

YFT members have used their weeks off to explore Britain.

When most of us think of holidays, we tend to conjure up sandy beaches, breathtaking attractions and, inevitably, hours spent at the airport. However, a couple of us from YFT have spent our summer holidays seeing the best of what Britain has to offer – much like our ancestors.

When our forebears began holidaying in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, seaside towns like Brighton, Blackpool and Rhyl were the main magnets, while areas of natural beauty such as Scotland and the Lake District also attracted their fair share of visitors.

I’ve recently got back from a trip to North Wales, exploring the huge Norman castles along the coast and venturing up Mount Snowdon – luckily in beautiful conditions, which meant I had some stunning views from the top. Meanwhile Alex headed down to the beautiful seaside town of Falmouth, and Lara is taking time off in the sweeping landscapes and coasts of Cornwall.

You only need to look up old guides and directories of these areas to realise the importance of tourism in our ancestors’ day. Far from the bright lights of Florida or Ibiza, lounging on a pebbly beach by the British seaside or exploring its rugged wilderness was the highlight of our Victorian forebears’ year, and so it’s been the case with YFT.
