Question Police Archives

I have discovered that a few of my ancestors seemed to have been in the police force. Are there any websites with online records of police officers?

I am looking for records in the mid to late 19th C.

Hi Chris,

Depending on the police department, you may be able to contact them for information.

I had an ancestor who was in the Manchester Police and was able to get minimal information on him.

Some police departments may have records online but you will have to google them to find out.

Happy Hunting

There is no central Repository for Police records. Records are held either by the relevant Force
or in the local Archives. This page at TNA might help :

Hi Chris, if your query relates to the UK Police, then I am afraid you will be out of luck, no information is given out directly, because of the Data Protection Act, however you could either contact an individual Force, or the National Assoc. of Retired Police Officers (NARPO) with an open letter, and they may agree to put it in their Newsletter, which may turn up something. As a retired PC I can't even get info on former Colleagues directly.
All the Best with your quest.
